How Does K-Music Benefit You?

As a fan of K-Culture, I’m sure you’ve been ridiculed and questioned about your taste in music? People often wonder how you can connect with something that you barely, or don’t understand at all?

“But they’re not speaking English.”

“How do you know what they’re saying?”

Via the English translations. Duh.

When it comes to K-Pop, K-Hip Hop, Korean Indie etc, it’s about more than just the music. With a sense of community and belonging, this is something that western music does not have. Why does Korean music formate people? This is the million dollar question!

Individual fandoms are just a small aspect of it all; look at K-Music as a whole, and you can compare it to a river, that has countless estuaries of fandoms. The main thing that K-Music has is the “it” factor. Ridiculous amounts of money is spent on video production, make-up and wardrobes, music shows, marketing, promotional activities and the construction of album artwork.

Now this is not a thing of the past! The eras of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s had much of these things included, but slowly it started to fade away, and was seen as a common fad. For some reason, Seoulites kept a hold of this, and the Korean music industry is a multi-million dollar machine.

Personally, I enjoy a wide range of music genres, as I appreciate music for the voice talent, song lyrics, percussion and production.

Having spent a lot of time at K-Culture events, and around fanatics, I can see that this community may be a family unit to some; especially for those who are enduring hardships in their everyday lives. It’s an escape mechanism. Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad; as it can often consume some people, and become unhealthy.

What I want to divulge into, is why people choose K-Music specifically as their past-time or their escape from reality? I can definitely put myself into the mindset of a hardcore fanatic, and see the pros. But the cons in my opinion are highly outweighed.

In the extreme cases:

  • What about everyday relationships with people outside of this community?
  • Personal goals and aspirations?
  • Romantic/human wants and needs, that don’t involve your favourite K-idol, or Korean actor/actress?

I will be exploring this topic more and more, as time goes on. I want to speak to you, the fans! You can be on either side of the spectrum.

Are you someone, or do you know someone that has an unhealthy relationship within this community?
